Akon
Akon was born on 16th April, 1973 as Aliaune Damala Badara Thiam and son of Senegalese djembe-drummer and Jazz legend Mor Thiam. Consequently hr imbibed music from infancy. His breakthrough came with the release of the single “Locked Up”, which turned out to be an international hit. It was released in several versions featuring international rap artists - in the US the song featured Styles P. , in France it was Booba and in Germany "Locked Up" was recorded with Azad.
His following hit "Mr. Lonely" topped the charts in more than 10 countries, including Germany, UK as well as Australia and peaked in the Top 5 on the US Billboard Charts. Akon has done features for stars such as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne and David Guetta in the past years. Moreover he produces most of his music by himself.
When he simultaneuosly debuted at No. 1 and No. 2 in the US Billboard Charts with “I Wanna Love You” and “Smack That”, he accomplished what only Mariah Carey and Usher had managed before him.
Furthermore he founded his own label, namely „Konvict Muzik“ and found several ways to make legal money, besides music e.g. by owning a diamond mine. As the executive who signed Lady Gaga and T-Pain, Akon continues to infere in the music industry and frequently promotes new artists. His latest discoveries are Hip Hop artist Verse Simmonds and Gospel rapper Mali Music.
By signing these new artists, Akon expands his reach with artists that create music for gospel, pop and R&B genres. Mali Music's new album is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2012.
